Looking into the causes and rates of childhood injuries is a topic he revisits in his research.  The article “Childhood Injuries Seen at an Emergency Department” Published in March 2008 by J Pak Med Assoc takes into account the relative frequency and pattern of injuries in children less than 15 years of age. A retrospective study was conducted of all children aged 15 and below seen with injuries and poisoning in an Emergency Department (ED) during 2000 and 2001, and their records were reviewed. Patterns of injury among all children were examined by location of occurrence, circumstances, anatomy and mechanism of injury, injury type, and patient disposition. The results revealed a total of 1412 children were seen in an ED with injuries and poisonings, with a mean of 7.5 ± 3.2 years. Boys experienced significantly higher rates than girls. Most injuries occurred at home. Playing was the leading context of injury in both genders. The most common mechanisms of injury were falls (44.5%), road traffic injuries (14.0%), and foreign body ingestion/inhalations (10%). In children up to the age of 5, injuries of the head and face were more common, while in older children, extremities were more frequently involved. Eighty seven patients (6.2%) were admitted to the hospital, and six patients died (0.42%). Conclusion: A large proportion of falls, along with low proportion of road traffic injuries and foreign body ingestion/inhalations, is characteristics of childhood injury profile in Saudi Arabia.

Derek Uhlman Sculpture

How is an artist formed? It would be just as easy to answer: “What makes up an artistic creation?” There are no easy answers to either of these questions; each artist is formed by a unique series of circumstances, as each artistic work is. C. Derek Uhlman is an award-winning sculptor whose work comments on the relationship between modern man and nature. He is best known for his large-scale outdoor sculpture. He has had several major corporate and private commissions and significant exhibitions.

Born in Battle Creek, Michigan, he moved to Stamford, Connecticut when he was still in the early part of grade school. He studied jewelry making and design in high school and continued working in that field after graduation. His interest in metal work and form grew in scale as he became interested in contemporary art, particularly in bronze casting and stone sculpture. He went on to study at the State University of New York (SUNY) in Purchase, NY and later at The Silvermine Guild of Artists. At Silvermine he became the assistant sculpture instructor under Ivan Biro who is a co-founder of 55 Mercer Gallery in Chelsea, NYC and a catalyst for the SOHO movement. Mr. Uhlman credits Ivan Biro for his development of advanced skills during the time he was his assistant. At first Ivan Biro had Mr. Uhlman work with him making mannequins for Sakes Fifth Avenue. C. Derek learned molding and casting and clay modeling. Later he joined Ivan in his studio for studio space where he could make his work.

It was a studio space in the studio that was once the studio of Gutzon Borglum (the sculptor who did Mt. Rushmore) that became C. Derek Uhlman’s very first own home for making his art. It was there that he made the original “Stone Flowers” in alabaster. This piece went on to be accepted in the exhibition “The Art of the Northeast” and was acknowledged with an award by the, then director of the Museum of Modern Art, Henry Geldzahler. Shortly thereafter it was purchased by a private collector.

Opportunity knocked once again on Mr. Uhlman’s door in the form of Reuben Nakian, “One of the most distinguished American sculptors of the 20th century” according to the New York Times. Mr. Nakian was 84 years old and working to put together a major show at the Marlborough Gallery in NYC. Mr. Uhlman was offered a job as an apprentice/assistant to Mr. Nakian. He worked with Reuben Nakian directly for two years and helped him create a series of sculptures for his Marlborough Gallery show. Mr. Uhlman supervised the casting of these pieces in bronze at area art foundries. He also assisted in the creation of many prints (etchings and drypoint) and drawings for the show. For a period he worked on the enlargement of a piece titled “The Garden of the Gods” from the original at 18 inches long by 10 inches high to 18 feet long by 10 feet high in preparation for casting in bronze. All the while Mr. Uhlman continued to work with Ivan Biro and on his own work in his studio.

Two months before the opening at the Marlborough Gallery, C. Derek Uhlman was approached by a director of the General Foods Corporation to make an enlargement of the sculpture “Stone Flowers” in marble. The opening of Marlborough Gallery show marked the conclusion of his employment with Nakian, and so Mr. Uhlman began the creation of a 37,000 lb marble sculpture for General Foods. This took 13 months to complete and was installed at a property they owned in Princeton, NJ. The year was 1982 and he was 25 years old at the time.

This time was also a time for C.Derek Uhlman to be married and start a family. He, his wife and growing family lived in an apartment above a store where C. Derek had little space to make art. As his art income was sporadic, he found more consistent work as a carpenter working in Greenwich Connecticut. For many years he worked as a carpenter and continued his artwork at Ivan’s studio.

Balancing life with the pursuit of his art, C. Derek Uhlman was accepted as an artist member at the prestigious Silvermine Guild of Artists. He exhibited there, and he was accepted a few more times into the “The Art of the Northeast”. In 1991 he was invited to be in a special show at Silvermine where the General Electric Corporation purchased his sculpture titled “Disk #4” for their collection and placed it at their world headquarters. Over the next few years they bought another four of his pieces including an enlargement of the original “Disk #4” for their offices at Rockefeller Center in NYC. Also during this time he had 2 pieces purchased for the CEO of Diawa Corp in Tokyo, Japan, and he was commissioned to create the award for the World Food Prize by The World Food Foundation. He took on this commission for many years, and at one point they commissioned him to create an enlargement. This piece was exhibited at the Rotunda at the Smithsonian Institution in Washington, DC. He has also exhibited at the National Academy of Design on Fifth Avenue in New York twice and at the Gallery 631 in Chelsea in New York. In addition to his affiliation with The Silvermine Art Center he is connected to: The Copley Society of Art, Boston; The Hammond Museum; The International Sculpture Center; and The Kouros Gallery in NYC. He is the a recipient of the Molly Jacobson Memorial Award, “Best of America Sculpture” from American Art Collector

Throughout the years C.Derek Uhlman continues to create his artwork, and teach privately. He raised his family and his additional work in the construction industry put his children through college. Even though his marriage was strained by his art career, he and his wife didn’t divorce until their youngest was 18 years old. He then found a wonderful loft studio and moved in. He has been in that studio for 7 years now and has had continued success with purchases, commissions and professional acknowledgments He is now 55 years old and feels more able to fully pursue his art career. Life is good.

C. Derek Uhlman is a Featured Member of Madison Who’s Who, and he can be found on the Madison Who’s Who Directory where he is looking forward to networking with you.

Madison Who’s Who Recognizes Christine E. Schlendorf

January 30th, 2012

The USA’s oldest wooden school house can be found still standing to this day in St. Augustine, Florida. One can only wonder if the original architect of this structure could see its future as such a landmark one. The house is documented in the tax rolls of 1716, but was constructed an unknown amount of time before then. It is built of pest-resistant red cedar and cypress timbers secured with wooden pegs. Seems some forethought for duration and durability went into the building materials of this house, but throughout the years it has been protected by such enhancements as the anchor that was attached to the house in 1937 by concerned townspeople who worried that a hurricane might sweep the little schoolhouse away. Modern architecture benefits from the developments in the technology of design and building materials to be able to construct buildings that would last longer than a few centuries without as much maintenance and upkeep as this oldest schoolhouse. Perkins Eastman is an Architecture Firm that specializes in progressive and innovative design that exceeds client goals and enhances the human experience. They have cultivated a diverse portfolio of projects spanning the following practice areas: Hotels, Housing, Office Buildings, K-12 Education, Corporate Interiors, Country Club, Cultural and Religious, Government, Healthcare, Retail, Science and Technology, Senior Living, and Urban Design. Christine E. Schlendorf is an Associate Principal of Perkins Eastman. Although she is involved in all aspects of architectural design, her expertise is in secondary and primary schools. Ms. Schlendorf contributes her skills in design planning and implementation from the start of the project to building completion.

In their “schoolwork” Perkins Eastman challenges itself to create relevant and inspiring learning environments that propel students to excel. In pursuit of their goal to improve school facilities for their national and international school clients the firm incorporates each institution’s unique core values, goals, and mission into the design. The Perkins Eastman merger with EE&K has bestowed access to a 50-year legacy of school planning and design, and they have enhanced their capacity to create private and public school environments that are bright and inviting, scaled to the child, and provide an effective, welcoming environment for teaching and learning both inside the classroom and out.

As for Christine Schlendorf’s schoolwork, she earned a Bachelors Degree in Architecture from Syracuse University. Shortly after graduating she began her career with Perkins Eastman; she therefore has nearly fifteen years with the company. This March she will represent Perkins Eastman at the 2012 Northeast Regional Conference held at Columbia University in New York City. The purpose of this conference is threefold: (1) analyze educational trends in urban environments that have been successfully implemented; (2) re-examine what technology means to teaching/learning and define an integrated approach supporting all users; and (3) share lessons learned from past projects to guide our thinking about the future. Christine Schlendorf will address the conference on the topic, “Avenues The World School: Educating the Whole Child”, and she will be joined by Ray Bordwell of Avenues World School.
